When you use black backgrounds, the image modifiers (the bounding boxes used to resize etc) all become invisible. I need to change the canvas color to grey so I can see them and then change the background to black once the modifications are done. Other software does this dynamically (typically 'inverse' or color complement of background color) so things stay visible no matter what.
